DADA MANIFESTO QUOTE BY HUGO BALL
The artistic expression that was
created entirely by the trauma of the war is known as Dadaism.
Dada or Dadaism is a cultural movement that began in neutral Zurich,
Switzerland, during World War I and peaked from 1916 to 1920. The movement mainly
involved literature, visual arts (poetry, art manifestoes, and art theory),
theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti war politics through a
rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works.
Dada activities included demonstrations, public
gatherings, and publication of art or literary journals. Passionate coverage of
art, politics, and culture filled most of their publications. The movement
influenced later styles, Avant-garde and Downtown music movements, and groups
including Surrealism. (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_dadaism)
“An
International word. Just a word and the word a movement. Very easy to
understand. Quite terribly simple. To make of it an artistic tendency must mean
that one is anticipating complications. Dada psychology, dada Germany cum
indigestion and fog paroxysm, dada literature, dada bourgeoisie, and
yourselves, honored poets, who are always writing with words but never writing
the word itself, who are always writing around the actual point. Dada world war
without end, dada revolution without beginning, dada, you friends and
also-poets, esteemed sirs, manufacturers, and evangelists. Dada Tzara, dada
Huelsenbeck, dada m'dada, dada m'dada dada mhm, dada dera dada, dada Hue, dada
Tza.” (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Dada_Manifesto_(1916,_Hugo_Ball)
From the quote, we could tell that Hugo was
introducing to the people the Dada movement. He tried to make it easy for
everyone to understand and know what the movement was all about. He did not
understand why they did not understand him because he thought it was simple.
That is why he said in his quote that “quite terribly simple”. He wanted people
to come to a realization of how art, poems sayings and their writings were used
to describe the movement. He also tried to point out how poet and writers wrote
or made their piece of work but failed to or did not actually talk about the
main issues but turned the whole story to make it complicated.
I like this quote and I chose it because
it brings to light how people around us hide facts especially when it comes to
our politics. They always hide the truth from us and feed us with lies, they cover up a lot of issues with the little things they do to
blindfold us into believing that there are more gold in everything that shines
which often is not so. Hugo did well to help people see reality as it was.
The Dada movement therefore helps to generate
the understanding of how the people were been treated wrongly and on how best
they could help fight back for their right.
it really is incredible how for one person a poem could seem so simple but to others it may be baffling. I guess that's the nature of art and the same goes for politics. Some people are so easily blinded to the real world.
